What: skinny cargoes
Which: I have been mentioning these for a while now and you need them in your wardrobe! You want a skinny chinos in a dark khaki or grey. Black is Ok but not preferable. They should be a narrow cut, with a few pockets and detailing. You don’t want over the top army style pants. You are not going camping. They should be slightly baggy around the hips and should stop short to show off your amazing heels. Mais oui.
Why: Because they are the love child of cargoes and harem pants. Because the military look is still hot. Because they are a great alternative to jeans and chinos. Because they work for weekends and evening. Because they are slimming: the pockets can hide all sorts of things.
Wear: With a blazer and a grey Tee a la Vicky B. You want something tailored and sophisticated to balance the look. You want a jacket with strong shoulders to balance out the silhouette. Try tossing on a longer fitted coat jacket a la Dries Van Noten. Try a cream blazer and pointy heels a la Stella McCartney ( thankyou Gwyneth:she is wearing Current Elliot). I don’t advise wearing this with a bomber jacket: it’s just too military looking. You are not an extra in MASH.

I love this look, but don’t wear heels unless going out(I know its a crime!), so would you be able to tell me what shoes could I wear instead?? Thanks heaps
Same question- I have 2 kids under 2, what flats and top can I wear with these? I can’t see me doing a blazer for the kindy drop off!
I have to say it is a crime not wearing heels with these trousers ! I know it’s a problem but the whole idea of wearing them with heels is that it give it an edge. With flats it’s a totally different loo: almost sporty! I would suggest in summer you could wear skinny cargoes with gladiators or T bar flats then it works. Now while it’s cold you could wear ballet flats or converse but you loose the groove so just buy chinos and roll them up: they are looser and will work a lot better than skinny cargoes with flats. Good luck!
Great question!…. who said you can’t wear a blazer for the school run? A ‘boyfriend’ blazer is loose and unstructured and easy to wear: You wouldn’t look out of place at all. As I mentioned below: the skinny cargoes start to look a little sporty if you don;t wear with heels and you loose the whole concept of contrasting the casual with the heels. SO i would suggest you stick to chinos which work with ballet flats if rolled up or just skinny jeans. As I mentioned below: wait for summer and then you can wear the skinny cargoes with T bar sandals and gladiators!
Thanks sooo much for your reply Fifi, will definately take your advice. So in summer, just go a grey t-shirt witht the the t bar flats then?
Katie, I have four kids and sometimes feel a little glammed up when doing the school drop off, but then I figure, the other mums wouldn’t know if I was going out for lunch or just to push the trolley around woolies, so you might as well feel good doing it!! (and the truth is they are probably taking notes and wondering where you get your great fashion advice from)
Absolutely…go for a T bar in silver or gold or tan…and yes black is Ok too! Love this look with a grey Tank or tee with a loose boyfriend blazer tossed over the top.
I agree : you may as well look chic: it’s the heels that look too dressed up, not the jacket. Think like the chic French women who wear flats all the time…

Thank you FiFi and thank you Rose! I agree that it’s the heels that feel too dressed up. I did pop in to esprit looking for their blazer and weren’t any left in my size
Must be quicker next time! Thanks again, love the report FiFi
