AUTUMN/WINTER 2007-8: SHOWS ROUND-UP …from Vogue UK
BALENCIAGA was the show of the week - no, maybe Dior was the winning show but Balenciaga’s was the winning collection with buyers, stylists and Vogue editors alike singing its praises and vying for first place on its waitings lists. Paris Fashion Week came to an end last night and as the fashion crowd disperse to every corner of the globe to recover from the style marathon and plan their winter wardrobes, fashion shoots and store windows, we bring you the first word on what you’ll be wearing next winter:
MODERN FABRICS - Miuccia Prada produced almost an entire collection based on a new subtly glittering nylon, while even Lara Bohinc’s handbags come in sporty, stretchy fabrics these days. For winter you can give the cashmere a rest and go top to toe in new sheeny materials. Our favourites? The Miu Miu heels.
FUTURISTIC: A result of the above, an obsession with the newest technology went close to alien proportions at Hussein Chalayan. Elsewhere it was more subtle - and do-able, with embossed silks and shiny treated fur and leather ready for a trip to the moon with Branson.
TIGHTS: Remaining opaque, they are thicker and ribbed and in every colour you can think of. At Miu Miu last night they were pulled up high above the waistband of skirts with cardigans tucked in. Sound strange? In coral it looked surprisingly appealing.RIDGED FUR: in chevons of black and white or brown and black - and fur is becoming increasingly casual, worn inside a hooded jacket or in strips on the front of a dress. Lanvin, YSL and Giles were among those who whipped it around the cuffs of cashmere coats, too.
BOMBER JACKETS: Put one on your shopping list - Berardi’s were particularly tempting - and they are high luxe in fur, silk and leather.
TWEED: As well as everywhere, it is sexy, form-fitting and mixed with a little lame for star power.
GREY - It’s returned as the colour of the winter but it won’t depress us as it did last year. From Versace to Vuitton it appeared in every shade from icy to darkest steel and looked both romantic and powerful.
PUF BALL HEMS - For coats and skirts, it’s a feminine statement and not a silly Eighties fad.
UNIFOMRS - Berardi and Givenchy both had stand-out military moments.
HUGE KNITS - They appeared first at Giles and were repeated throughout the season, from YSL to Collette Dinnigan.
DIRNDLS - Christopher Kane started it and the world has followed suit.FULL BACKS: Fashion’s search for innovative silhouettes has landed a new emphasis on the back, with coats and dresses growing out behind the models at Lanvin, Vuitton, Bottega Veneta and with regularity in New York and London, too.
HAIR AND MAKE UP: It’s Veronica Lake all the way, baby, with kissy kissy plum lips.
