Thank You For Smoking ….directed by first time director Jason Reitman son of Ivan Reitman
Who: Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello, Adam Brody, Katie Holmes,Rob Lowe, William H. Macy.Robert Duvall
Genre: satire. Black satire. Comedy, Exploitation, Big Business,
The Plot: Washington 2006; Nick Naylor is the spindoctor for Big Tobacco. He is blond and handsome. Loves going on TV to tell people that smoking is good. Gets sent to Hollywood to make a deal with high-powered agent. Wants Brad and Catherine Zeta J smoking in the nude together. Meets a sexy reporter. Has sex every which way. All the time. She writes a scathing article on him. He gets the sack. Wriggles out of every situation. Remains unscrupulous, ruthless with nil integrity. Is that funny?
Acting: Aaron Eckhart is fantastic. Katie Holmes is a drip. Rob Lowe is fabulous
Photography: Fantastic opening titles with cigarette packets.
Set design: Everything seems to have a tobacco filter on it and looks yellow stained. His groovy apartment is all brown and chic.
Salon de Beaute: Katie Holmes; what’s with the hair? Flat, frizzy it makes your ears stick out.
Wardrobe: Nothing to write home about.
Mind drifted to shopping: When I saw the briefcase full of money.
Botox: Is probably good for you. Smoking is not. See Rob Lowe for the evidence.
Waterproof mascara: Laughed but not till we cried.
Smooches: A couple of scenes were smoking. No pun.
Blood’n’guts: No blood but spine tingling black satire.
Best review: “ an acerbically funny satire, Thank You For Smoking offers no filters as it mercilessly puffs out moral controversy and political incorrectness. It’s fast, witty and sharp, as the film lobbies for personal choice, hitting bulls-eyes in the underbellies of everything" URBAN CINEFILE
Best worst Review: "A superficial satire of spin-doctoring and political correctness that is spottily amusing but ultimately about as satisfying as a nicotine patch for a chronic smoker." LA DAILY NEWS
See it or donate to the Prada bag fund: Buying a Prada bag brings great joy and redemption. The world becomes a happy place. See this movie then buy a Prada bag to erase the searing cynicism. Sometimes too much black is not a good thing. Except in your wardrobe.
