The Cooler with William H Macey and Alec Baldwin
This is a love story but a kooky, funny love story. Set in Vegas it’s about a guy Bernie (played by William H Macey, the actor from Fargo) who is the biggest loser in the world. In fact he is so good at being a loser he is employed by the Shangri La casino to just stand next to people. His bad luck is so contagious that his mere presence is a jinx and he cools any winning streaks. He just looks at them with his sad sack face and Bingo! It means no bingo at all! People stop winning left right and center as soon as he appears. Bless. But then he meets the babe cocktail waitress who is a Sharon Stone look alike and falls in love and his luck changes. But this being Vegas it’s a really seedy place with seedy people. So you have to be worried about Bernie’s evil long lost son and the mean and even more evil and nasty Alec Baldwin, the Casino boss.He is so fat I can’t believe he is going to play the skinny gay fashion designer Halston in his next movie ( better get his stomach stapled) ooh scary! And watch out for that spunk Burger from Sex and the city who plays against Alec Baldwin to take over the casino. But back to the love story and the sex scenes! The New York Times said “the sex scenes are awkward and funny, and the actors gamely remove their vanity along with their clothes. Theirs are not sculptured movie-star bodies — there are some sags and creases on display — but this makes the characters seem more real and makes their interaction sexier than the usual movie-star panting and grappling”. Crickey so many sags and creases and gasp! Cellulite! What a shock! But it makes this movie charming and funny and delightful (if you don’t watch the violence) and we all love a love story especially about losers turning into winners and hitting the jackpot.
