To be and To Have : A French documentary
After the crazy Hollywood blockbuster epic of Troy how nice to see a movie completely the anathema. This is the sweetest movie and though it sounds boring it is delightful .Yes delightful “it charts the life of a small one-class village school over a year, and takes a warm and serene look at a dozen youngsters, aged 4-10, taught by one single teacher of extraordinary dedication. A master in quiet authority, Georges Lopez patiently navigates the children towards adolescence, cooling down their arguments and listening to their problems.” We watch the kids go sledging in the snow and then bring out their desks into the lovely garden in summer .We watch the children being cheeky monkeys, unselfconscious, affectionate, naughty and going through anguishing adolescense angst .You become so involved in their lives and their lovely gentle teacher that by the end of it I do declare I heard sniffling from everyone in the cinema. Oh yes we laughed, we cried, we wanted to give all the parents makeovers ( from drab to fab! From mundane to fame) and we wanted to move to France toute de suite and parlez Francais and live in a cute village. Oui c’est La Vie
