The Haute Couture has begun in Paris and there is lots happening: “John Galliano sent up Ancien Régime excess with a theatrical Christian Dior collection that mixed Madame Pompadour and Miss Universe. It was celebrity gridlock at the Christian Dior show that kicked off couture week, with Oprah Winfrey, Diane Kruger, artist Tracey Emin and Elizabeth Hurley among the assorted glitterati. “I wanted a moment of magic,” said French actress Juliette Binoche, who just wrapped up a film in San Francisco with Richard Gere called “Bee Season.” Actress Katie Holmes was making her couture debut, traveling from London where she has been working on her next movie, “Batman Begins.” The 20-year-old daughter of Angela Missoni is hitting couture week for an upcoming feature in the American edition of Elle. Her job description: “I’m going to all the shows, picking the clothes I think are the best and then they shoot it on me.” Melania Knauss, Donald Trump’s fiancée, is attending the couture shows with André Leon Talley at her side. American Vogue is doing a story on her choosing her trousseau. But her first appearance, at Tuesday’s Dior show, got some tongues wagging when Donald’s ex, Ivana, made her way to her seat on the other side of the runway” From WWD
In the International Herald Tribune Suzy Menkes writes” Lunch in the Ritz bar: Valentino entertaining at one table; Liz Hurley pushing her son in a stroller; Alexandra Von Furstenberg doing self-service at the buffet; and jeweler Joel Rosenthal discreetly in the corner. All the couture ladies were in the uniform du jour: blue jeans, high heels, fine jewels, flawless make-up and only the pastel tweed Chanel jacket a little frayed (by design) round the edges”
Or this run down from NYP: John Galliano, the label’s head designer, apparently went overboard with his signature wacky corsets and heavy Turkish curtain-like fabrics. According to our source, “Alek Wek vomited before the show because her corset was too tight. And poor Karolina Kurkova — her dress was so heavy and awkward, when she walked down the runway, she lost her balance and fell off the runway completely. Because her outfit was so heavy it took four men to get her back up and going.” Feeling less weighted down was Naomi Campbell who, the night before, had a “love fest” with Kal Ruttenstein, Pharrell Williams, Eve, Tommy Hilfiger, and her “special” friend, Karim Aga Khan [heir to the late Aga Khan's fortune] at Italian restaurant Dressa.
