The FiFi Report 310
2 July 2010
Men are wimping out…

“Men are wimping out, in the example of Judd Apatow’s chronic adolescent characters, or being mowed down by Beyoncé and Lady Gaga.” Cathy Horyn in talking about the Milan Menswear shows.

“You had to get past the “Springtime for Hitler” finale, a platoon of models stomping down the runway clad all in black leather and with the knee boots and peaked motorcycle caps that hardly anybody wears anymore except aging leather daddies and the architect Peter Marino. Oh, and the neo-Fascists who make their headquarters in Milan” Guy Trebay referring to the Emporio Armani show in

“OK but no joke gladiator sandals are OUT. They came out in summer 2008 and I was like, ok those are really cute. Then 2009 comes around and people are still wearing them so I’m like, ok whatever it’s just a phase. BUT NOOOOO. Because good old 2010 is now coming along and people are STILL wearing them, and then I was just like OK NO! It’s been three years people COME ON!!!!!!!!! I’m just like what???? ” …Lourdes “Lola” Leon in her first blog post for her mum, Madonna’s “Material Girl” line for Macy’s…. Shut up!

“Shoes! I’m all about the shoes! I order a ton of them online and play with my entire wardrobe until I find the right shoe. Unfortunately, so many people get it right from the head until the ankles. The shoe is very important. I can’t even f88k with you if your shoe game is slacking.” Solange Knowles. Wimp.

“It’s the first piece of clothing your baby will ever wear, and it should be special” Cynthia Rowley on her designer nappies for Target. oh dear.

” I always carry a man-bag. I own two Marc Jacobs bags from his last collection and I walk with them all the time. And I love the shirt; I have no shame in showing off my man-boobs.” -Danny Alba, 23, a wimpy? fashion student to

Fashion APPS

Here are FiFi’s Five favourite Fashion APPs! They will keep you amused for hours..

Longer skirts are back!

What : Longer skirts
Why : Because what goes up has to come down. Because this length works with the new 50’s and 70’s style silhouette. Because it’s nice to cover your knees. Because it’s nice to cover the tops of your boots. Because it looks new and that in fashion means it’s right.
Which: You want a skirt that is a little flared. That is a little full. Although a longer pencil skirt looks good too it can be trickier to wear. All that hobbling around makes striding out in a hurry difficult don’t you think? You want a skirt that sits just below the knee or longer. It can be sheer. Too long and it  will cut off your legs at the wrong point . Ewww.
Wear: This is a great shape to look for right now, in the sales, so you can get onto the trend and get your mileage out of it. Wear with a shorter jacket to show off the shape. Wear with long boots or killer platform heels. Wear with socks and heels. Wear with a top that tucks in to show off your waist. Wear with a belt.
Where: You can find it at and for next season.  Check out  for more shots of the fashion pack rocking the look and .

Reason to love the Chanel Hydramax+ Active Nourishing Cream

  • Because we love admiring anything chic and Chanel in the bathroom.
  • Because this freezing weather is making your face as dry as a week in AA.
  • Because you spent your Botox money on Louboutins.
  • Because when you looked in the mirror, put on your new spectacles, you’re were not sure who was staring back at you.
  • Because those laugh lines are not funny. Up close.
  • Because they say it has CERATONIA PFA* which powerfully stimulates hydration.
  • Because I think it also has Shea Butter and Cottonseed Oil extract for extra plumping.
  • Because OMG: I think I’ve been pumped!
  • Because my skin is feeling as soft as a Chanel bag. Formidable.

Dreaming of Dior: Every Dress Tells a Story… by Charlotte Smith

‘Charlotte Smith had already had more than her fair share of fabulous dresses and adventures. She lived life to the fullest in London, Paris and New York before falling in love with Australia and making it her home.
Then she discovered that she had inherited a priceless vintage clothing collection from her American Quaker godmother, Doris Darnell.
When the boxes started arriving, they were filled with more than three thousand pieces dating from 1790 to 1995, from Dior and Chanel originals to a dainty pioneer dress.
But when she unearthed her godmother’s book of stories, the true value of what she had been given hit home. This wasn’t merely a collection of beautiful things; it was a collection of lives. Women’s lives. Tiny snapshots of our joys and disappointments, our entrances and exits, triumphant and tragic.
This is a book for any woman who knows a dress can hold a lifetime of memories.

Country …. by Jasper Conran
‘Jasper Conran’s Country is unlike any lifestyle book you’ve ever seen. It’s neither a catalog of perfectly decorated spaces nor a how-to compendium of design problems and solutions. Rather, it is a deeply moving vision of the pleasures of country life and an intensely felt celebration, in pictures and text, of all things rural-the landscapes, the people, the houses, the traditions.

Country’s captivating photographs delight the eye as Conran uses the landscape and homes that are familiar to him to explore universal themes as he travels through the seasons, moving from indoors to outdoors while lovingly documenting country life as it is lived today. It’s not a book to “refer to” for help or advice this project or that. It is a book to spend a good long time with as you weave your own dreams for that universally desired life-one lived well, and in the country’. Lovely!

FiFi Alert!

FiFi has fallen off her Balenciagas and will be recovering in rehab in Paris for two weeks.

Sorry.

There will be two shorter FiFi Reports posted on FiFi.com.au over the next 2 weeks to keep you from becoming too daggy while I am away.

Now back to shopping this week..

Witchery :
It’s looking all soft and caramel and beige and cream in here which is great if you are heading north for some warmth. Or going to Paris like me.
My picks are :

  • Of course I am drawn straight away to the gorgeous trench: it’s soft and draped with no visible buttons: it’s a floppy linen tencil fabric and just so chic for trans seasonal dressing $199
  • Love the cream double breasted peaocat. I am not sure who can wear a cream “dusty shell ” jacket: I would have chocolate croissant dribbling down it in two seconds flats. But for those who are always pristine it’s for you. Love the cocoon shape and the high collar $349.
  • Love the grey marle jersey cami top with black grograin straps: yes, that’s a handy little number to throw under jackets. Will work from day to evening for sure. Grey marle is still a big look for next season and you could layer this under a white tee. $59.
  • In the bag department check out the new taupe or crinkled tan two handle tote: tan is a huge story worn with denim for next season and this is a great way to update the wardrobe in one swipe. $229.

Cue:
Best buys on sale are;

  • The fabulous black double breasted, very tailored, sleeveless coat dress : it’s like a long vest and very chic with a little subtle silver lurex pinstripe. This is a very important shape and very reminiscent of YSL, Stella, Gaultier and Chloe. It’s now $88. That’s outrageous . A great buy.
  • You want the amazing over the top very Gucci-esque purple/blue faux fur chubby: it’s mad and over the top but what a great buy for $95. True.
  • Or if you want something to keep you warm then you should have the brown faux fur crop and short sleeve, little pull on jacket now $94.
  • Buy the black velvet pinstripe jacket: it has a peplum detail around the waist and shoulder pads and it’s very chic. This will definitely take you through to next winter. A hot buy $159

Nine West:
Checkout the sale but also I see a few new season shoes have arrived in store:

  • Buy the low heel, moc croc sling back heels with a round toe . Perfect for those for work who don’t and can’t wear outrageous killer heels. I feel for you. Bless $130. In a few colours.
  • There are chic little strappy summer sandals with crisscross ankle straps and plaiting. They have a cute tiny little wedge cork heel. For you $139. In tan or black.
  • Check out the very Balenciaga two handle tote in black if you need a new bag and you are on a budget ( but it doesn’t seem to be such an outrageous obvious copy). $89
  • There are some chic , very Lanvin style silver metallic ballet flats on sale for $69 and some fabulous gold and brown platform heels on sale $59. cool.
  • If you suddenly feel like you need long boots then buy the brown or black boots with a slight faux snakeskin detail and a good walk-able heel now on sale $129.

Business Class:
Longchamp:

I love this store and there are always fabulous little zip leather cases, diaries and of course those fabulous nylon totes.
My pick this week is The Kate Moss for Longchamp collection and you want :

  • The fabulous big, oversized black and white zebra tote about $2000.
  • The small black clutch with lovely stitching around the edge. $295: it has cute black and white zebra lining inside. So you can quickly see the Amex lurking inside.
  • The grey suede one handle tote with a few silver zips about $1100.
  • The plain black bag almost Balenciaga style inspired bag with outside silver zips $1200.
  • The chic de la red weekend tote or is it a day bag? with two handles about $1800.
  • You will love the camel style one handle bag about $1300.

Country Road:
My picks of the new pieces in this week:

  • The black and white stripe T with all different panels and drape twist details on the front. It’s loose in shape and I like how they are showing it with a jeweled necklace $99.
  • While in the stripe top department you should have the long sleeve knit stripe tee with those shoulder details sticking out and a V neck: Yes, we saw a version of this in Portmans last summer but hey the fabric here is great. Still a chic look for summer. But I might vomit if I see another stripe Tee! $129.
  • Love the new grey cotton chinos. A little different in shape from last season . You know chinos are all you need. Wear with heels and rolled up to show them off. A must buy to replace boring black pants $89.
  • You want the cute navy shoe-string cotton nightie. So cute! Almost to wear as a dress when you hit the south of France. $89
  • Buy the navy and black silk cami : it’s for warmer weather but great for going under jackets. I know I have been banging on about navy and black together for years and now you can buy it already put together. $99
  • Check out the cute navy and black animal print, very Lanvin style dress . It’s sleeveless, with a round neckline and has cheeky black inserts at the waist $229: love this with black opaques and boots/heels and layered over a metallicus long sleeve top. Wear under a trench and voila! Summer to winter.

Exciting news!
Country Road and Red Cross launching a new fashion initiative, called Fashion Trade!
Fashion Trade aims to raise money for the community and reduce landfill by encouraging people to recycle their wearable, pre-loved Country Road clothes.
The initiative is the first of its kind in the Asia Pacific Region and brings together the power of two trusted, international brands.

From July 1st 2010 , simply donate any pre-loved and of good condition, Country Road clothes to any Red Cross retail store, and you’ll receive a $10 voucher to put towards your next purchase of $50 or more at Country Road stores in Australia and New Zealand. Fantastic!

Linguine with Lemon, Garlic, Thyme and Mushrooms ….adulterated from N

This is outrageously easy and will take more time to write than cook it.  It’s basically just tossing the mushrooms, lemon and thyme through the cooked pasta and virtually cooking it by the heat. Delicioso!

You need for 6 girls, 4 men and 30 models

225g chestnut mushrooms
80ml extra virgin olive oil
1 x 15ml tablespoon Maldon salt or 1 1/2 teaspoons table salt
1 small clove garlic,
crushed zest and juice of 1 lemon
4 sprigs of fresh thyme, stripped to give 1 teaspoon leaves
500g linguine
1 bunch fresh parsley, chopped 2-3 tablespoons
freshly grated Parmesan,
Freshly ground pepper to taste.

  • Slip into Burberry puffa jacket.
  • Pull on mountaineering socks. And hat.
  • Turn up the fire/heater/George Clooney full blast.
  • Pour a wine or ten.
  • Chop the garlic in pieces the size of your credit limit left on your Amex.
  • Chop the mushrooms as finely as an Hermes watch band.
  • Stripe the thyme leaves from the sprigs. NB ; that will be the only stripping tonight.
  • Chop the parsley into pretty small bits.
  • Zest the lemon and then juice it.
  • Toss the mushrooms in a large bowl with the oil, salt, crushed garlic, lemon juice and zest, and the divine scented thyme leaves.
  • Cook the pasta and drain loosely, retaining some water.
  • Pour another wine.
  • Quickly put the drained pasta into the bowl with the mushroom mixture.
  • Toss everything together well.
  • Then add the chopped parsley, grated cheese and pepper to taste, before tossing again,
  • Eat with joy in your heart.
  • Thank you Nigella.
