The eighties are back. But there is something missing. We have Rayban Aviator sunglasses, short hair, red lipstick, neon colours, leggings and high waist pants. Now I have one word to say to you: Shoulder pads. Please don’t groan. You did that when hipsters came back and look at you now. You won’t take them off. Shoulder pads were lurking in the collections of Balenciaga, Martin Margiela, Christian Dior, Armani and Alexander McQueen. But as fashion journalist Sarah Mower reports in the London Telegraph newspaper “The uprising shoulder, you’ll be relieved to hear, is different from the gargantuan, rounded monstrosities of Eighties tailoring. So far, it’s more of a neat, compact silhouette with vaguely Forties overtones, best worn with a pencil skirt, a high-necked blouse and heels. Among my friends, there are many who - having got into soft dresses and cocoon-y coats recently - have shrieked in horror at this news. I don’t mind, though. To me, the arrival of slick, assertive tailoring is the long-awaited, grown-up antidote to the heinous smocks, tents and mini-dresses of this summer. I can’t wait to get into it, but I do permanently draw the line at those little velcro-in pads we used to stick into everything we wore in the Eighties. Some things really are Never Again.” You heard it here first. You have been warned.

Slummy Mummy by Fiona Neill
Anna Wintour, from US Vogue says “Hilarious . . . a literary phenomenon to rival Helen Fielding’s Bridge Jones’s Diary and Allison Pearson’s I Don’t Know How She Does It . . . [Neill] plays with the chaos and comedy of 30-something metropolitan maternity and brings it to an unexpectedly moving conclusion.” Like Bridget Jones before her, Lucy Sweeney is an endearing everywoman prone to disaster. Lucy is a married, stay-at-home mom who gave up an impressive career as a television news producer to care for her three sons in northwest London. Lucy exists in a constant state of chaos (she has lost 11 credit cards in the past year, she has seven credit card debts and a habit of wearing pajamas to drop off her children at school). A flirtation with a Sexy Domesticated Dad threatens to develop into something more…..

Amara de Lempicka: The Artist, The Woman, The Legend by Emmanuel Breon
‘A femme fatale to equal Greta Garbo and Mae West, and a fashion icon in her own lifetime, this exhibition catalog is dedicated to the artist as well as the concept of the modern woman she represented. Born in 1898 in Warsaw, Lempicka fled during the Bolshevik Revolution, arriving in Paris in 1918 where she began painting under André Lhote. Influenced by a trip to Italy, she combined neo-cubism and Renaissance influences, reducing the harmony of her colors to the essential and tightly framing her portraits in order to give the figures energy and stature. In 1933 she married her best client, Baron Raoul Kuffner de Dioszegh, and in 1939 they left for America where Tamara conquered New York and Los Angeles exhibiting in important galleries’.

Flourless Walnut Cake…from Stephanie Alexander
This is a divine cake for dessert or afternoon tea. It has no flour and it won’t rise very much so just make sure you use a small but deep cake tin. You will see - as I did - that a big tin will make this cake look very skinny (not like you will be after you eat it.)
You need for 8.
175g whole Walnuts
5 Eggs, separated
5 tabs caster Sugar
1/8 of a preserved lemon. If you don’t have them then zest one lemons and add 2 teasp lemon juice
3 teas rum or gin or whatever booze you have in the fridge

Best Review: "A dark fairy tale from Russia, The Italian pulls you into a richly atmospheric, persuasively inhabited world teeming with foundlings and pathos." New York Times
Best Worst Review:“ We soon grow tired of marveling at Vanya’s preternatural resourcefulness and plead for the thing to end — which it soon does in the sappiest possible way, soft-focus close-up and all.” Film Blather
See it or donate to the Prada Bag fund: Life is too short. Rush over to Prada. Press your nose against the window. And rejoice in the beautiful sight. Remember there is no despair when you buy a Prada bag (except when you get the bill)
