Burning Bright (Hardcover) by Tracy Chevalier
‘If you loved Girl with a Pearl Earring, you will not be disappointed with this new novel by Tracy Chevalier. But where the previous novel moved speedily, this one is slower. Set in 18th century England a family of modest means moves to the British capital from the countryside. The father receives an invitation to come to London to join the circus as builder of all sorts of things. This family tale settles for the most part on the shoulders of the two youngest children, a boy and a girl, and a girl they befriend, who introduces them to the byways of the great metropolis’…..slow but enjoyable

‘The less Azzedine Alaïa deigns to be involved in the fashion system, the more his influence seems to grow. The Spring and now Fall runways have been bursting with nods, subtle or not, to the high hemlines, corseted waists, and body-hugging silhouettes that Alaïa perfected in the eighties. Fitting, then, that the Tunisian-born, Paris-based designer has been chosen to “dress” this year’s NYC edition of Le Book—the fashion media directory—in a joint effort with his longtime collaborator, French artist Jean-Paul Goude. The edition includes the designer’s sketches, Goude’s iconic collages, and charming photographs, all featuring the diminutive mega-talent in quirky scenarios (peeking out of a stack of boxes, and from beneath a billowing skirt). In a word: inimitable’ From www.Style.com

AUTUMN/WINTER 2007-8: SHOWS ROUND-UP …from Vogue UK
BALENCIAGA was the show of the week - no, maybe Dior was the winning show but Balenciaga’s was the winning collection with buyers, stylists and Vogue editors alike singing its praises and vying for first place on its waitings lists. Paris Fashion Week came to an end last night and as the fashion crowd disperse to every corner of the globe to recover from the style marathon and plan their winter wardrobes, fashion shoots and store windows, we bring you the first word on what you’ll be wearing next winter:
MODERN FABRICS - Miuccia Prada produced almost an entire collection based on a new subtly glittering nylon, while even Lara Bohinc’s handbags come in sporty, stretchy fabrics these days. For winter you can give the cashmere a rest and go top to toe in new sheeny materials. Our favourites? The Miu Miu heels.
FUTURISTIC: A result of the above, an obsession with the newest technology went close to alien proportions at Hussein Chalayan. Elsewhere it was more subtle - and do-able, with embossed silks and shiny treated fur and leather ready for a trip to the moon with Branson.
TIGHTS: Remaining opaque, they are thicker and ribbed and in every colour you can think of. At Miu Miu last night they were pulled up high above the waistband of skirts with cardigans tucked in. Sound strange? In coral it looked surprisingly appealing.RIDGED FUR: in chevons of black and white or brown and black - and fur is becoming increasingly casual, worn inside a hooded jacket or in strips on the front of a dress. Lanvin, YSL and Giles were among those who whipped it around the cuffs of cashmere coats, too.
BOMBER JACKETS: Put one on your shopping list - Berardi’s were particularly tempting - and they are high luxe in fur, silk and leather.
TWEED: As well as everywhere, it is sexy, form-fitting and mixed with a little lame for star power.
GREY - It’s returned as the colour of the winter but it won’t depress us as it did last year. From Versace to Vuitton it appeared in every shade from icy to darkest steel and looked both romantic and powerful.
PUF BALL HEMS - For coats and skirts, it’s a feminine statement and not a silly Eighties fad.
UNIFOMRS - Berardi and Givenchy both had stand-out military moments.
HUGE KNITS - They appeared first at Giles and were repeated throughout the season, from YSL to Collette Dinnigan.
DIRNDLS - Christopher Kane started it and the world has followed suit.FULL BACKS: Fashion’s search for innovative silhouettes has landed a new emphasis on the back, with coats and dresses growing out behind the models at Lanvin, Vuitton, Bottega Veneta and with regularity in New York and London, too.
HAIR AND MAKE UP: It’s Veronica Lake all the way, baby, with kissy kissy plum lips.
Roast Chilli paste:….. Adulterated from Donna Hay
I saw this recipe and fell in love. Chili! Garlic! Olive oil! All roasted together. This is hot but fabulous. Like the latest Jimmy Choo bag. But watch out. All you just need is a tiny Manolo stiletto heel dollop to set you on fire. Divine on roast salmon, chicken or just plonked on crusty white bread and with cheese.
You need for ½ cup
8 small red chillies
1 big head of garlics, cloves separated
½ teasp cumin seeds
Sel et poivre
Add Lime juice if too hot.
•Preheat oven to 180
•Grab a chic oven tray
•Separate the garlic so all the gloves are pulled apart. Don’t peel them you want them to keep their little coats on while they roast.
•Grab a fork and pull the chillies out of the freezer. That’s where you should keep them. Don’t touch them with your fingers and rub your eyes. Waterproof mascara will not stand that test.
•Plonk chillies whole on baking tray
•Sprinkle over Cumin seeds as well
•Drizzle over the Olive oil. Add more if you need to.
•Roast it in the oven until the garlics smell divine and are soft and gooey like your thighs. The chillies skins should be a little burnt and blackened.
•Donna Hay says to roast for 10 minutes. I say Roast for about 25 minutes. Please explain
•Now throw chillies garlics, cumin, oil and salt and pepper in a whizzer or just bash them up in a mortar and pestle until smooth.
•Spread it over salmon or chicken to marinate before you roasting.
•Keep in the fridge but it won’t last long!
Notes on a Scandal …..Directed by Richard Eyre of the Northern Theatre of LondonBased on: The novel by Zoe Heller with a screenplay by Patrick Marber and a score by Philip Glass
Genre: thriller
Who: Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy.
The Plot: London 2006. Bored, bourgeois, married school teacher seduces young school boy. Befriends bitter and twisted spinster teacher. She becomes obsessed. Scandal is revealed of love affair between teacher and pupil. There is shouting. A lot of Screaming. Bitter and twister creepy spinster relishes taking notes on the scandal. Bitter and twisted becomes more bitter and twisted. If that’s possible. Bribery and corruption. More screaming. More obsessions. A silly ending. The end.
Acting: fabulous.
Design: Cate Blanchett’s house in London especially her studio is all rather arty and chic.
Wardrobe: Cate Blachett wears groovy trench coats and chic trousers, groovy sweaters. Very Miu Miu and Marni. Judi Dench as the B&T spinster is just a frump. She should be on What Not to Wear.
Salon de Beaute: Cate Blanchett’s hair and makeup is a bit too glamourous and she always looks a bit too perfect. Even with mascara running down her face. Judi Dench wears a wig so she has shocking, frumpy hair. Her makeup and wrinkly face is an inspiration for plastic surgery and moisturizer. See her and rush home to immediately apply Erase those Fine Lines.
Botox: Has Cate had it? I think so. Has Judi had it? Doubt it. Do you need it? Yes, absolutely in the creepy bits.
Waterproof Mascara: Not funny Jan.
Blood ’n’ Guts: No blood although you would like to kill Judi Dench.
Mind drifted to shopping: When thinking about Judi Dench’s makeover.
Smokin’ smooches: Ooh la la. In awkward places.
Car chases: Not one.
Rename It: Fatal Attraction (It’s a pussy boiler).
Movie Mistake #1There’s a scene where Barbara Covett is writing in her journal and the voice-over refers to it as "A Gold Star Day," and we see a close-up shot of Barbara’s index finger pasting a gold star on the page of her journal; her fingernail is unpolished and just a bit grimy. In the next shot, we see Barbara still writing in her journal but now her nails are polished pink. (You can see this in the clip "Gold Star Day," which is on the film’s website).
Best Review; “A wonderfully salacious and psychologically controlling character piece, which brilliantly showcases two of the industry’s more gifted actresses.” Hollywood.com
Best Worst Review: A mental slasher movie with strong lead performances, but too many literary pretenses to mask that it’s little more than an 80-minute buildup to a throwdown between Oscar-winning actresses with no real sense of the story’s leverage and lust” State Journal-Register.
See it or donate to the Prada Bag fund? It’s a fabulous thriller but watching such a B&T frump will make rush, and I mean rush, to Prada to recover.
