Sportsgirl Vintage Golden Palomino Dress

I am not keen on wearing vintage clothes from op shops. It can be so smelly. And who knows? The person could have died wearing it. Or worse. They could have been a dag. But vintage is very groovy because you can get such an original look (daggy dead person not withstanding). So those of you who love vintage fashion that’s clean will love the opening of a vintage store inside Sportsgirl. They have a clever little spot called Finders Keepers. It’s a collection of vintage accessories from clutch bags to scarves and belts. Then check out the groovy collection of strapless dresses in vintage fabrics called Golden Palomino. Very cool and very individual. It’s something that you will happy to be caught dead wearing.

Rayban wayfarers

Who wants to look like the Olsen twins? They seem to have taken the line “you can never be too thin or too rich’ far too seriously. But I see they are finally wearing something groovy. This season’s hot item du jour are Rayban wayfarers. As you know or may even remember they were the only sunglasses to be seen in during the eighties. Think Tom Cruise in Risky Business. Actually maybe not. Now Wayfarers are back. Reworked in a few different styles you can get them at Sunglass Hut or go to E bay for originals vintage styles. They are groovy so please don’t get worried if I have mentioned both the Olsen twins and Tom Cruise wearing them…

London Fashion Week commenced this week” London is back on a fashion high it hasn’t experienced for a decade. A new cohort of a dozen contenders for serious international attention is taking to the runway this week, but as ever in this city, the real story is the exploding subculture that’s fueling all the creativity. The source of the optimistic energy ricocheting between designers’ studios and the clubs can chiefly be tracked down to Boombox, run by Richard Mortimer at the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen in the East End on Sundays. Here, Central Saint Martins student sybarites, drag queens, and young designers compete in a weekly spectacle of outdress-thy-neighbor, taking shoestring-budget sartorial customization—and incredible feats of makeup—to almost editorial levels of innovation” reports Style.com Everyone was raving about Christopher Kane’ collection “ rich and potent components that went into Christopher Kane’s second collection The level of polish and accomplishment in this collection was precocious; you could put the show on a runway in Paris, and it would still shine. Kane’s the strongest talent to have emerged in London in a decade—and more remarkably, his clothes are selling. Twenty-two dresses flew out of the London store Browns within two days of delivery, confounding the chorus of critics who called his first collection vulgar. Just one year out of Central Saint Martins, this young designer is an extraordinary star on the rise” WWD

Any book set in Venice gets my vote..”A standout debut novel, which heralds a major new talent in the psychological thriller genre. After a tutoring job in Venice falls through, aspiring novelist Adam Woods appears to luck into the perfect position there—as personal assistant to the reclusive Gordon Crace, an acclaimed writer whose life is shrouded in mystery and who’s published only one novel.” Sarah Dunant, author of The Birth of Venus writes “A mouldering Venetian palazzo, a decaying old man and an unscrupulous young writer. Corruption, seduction and a notable lack of guilt. A story as rank and rich as the city it is set in.” Perfect !

The big news from Fashion week in New York is ‘Arrivederci, frivolity, girliness, piles and piles of fluff stuff! Ciao, bella, molto chic! Marc Jacobs showed a collection which was an homage to Nan Kempner ( A perfect tie in with the exhibition of haute couture clothes at the Met). it’s all about classic American Sportswear. The look is moving away from the loose silhouette from last seasons and back to a more structured tailoring. Great news because this is really flattering and chic. Also keep wearing those opaque hosiery.Style.com reports that “ Midway through the London shows, it’s evident that the black-tights obsession that gripped New York designers is working its same dark magic here. Whether clad in thick latex or sheer nylon, models’ legs have been uniformly funereal (as have editors’). " The other big trends? Pencil skirts; zip, jumpsuits, sheer dresses, heavy fringes ( that’s on the head not on the bags), high waists and flowers trims and again lots of long gloves a la last season’s Marni.

Sportsgirl
Lots of great winter pieces in this week. They have finally said goodbye to the Boho NoNo look and tacky 80’s bad taste/hippy dippy look and getting into some real fashion. Check out the cool pleat front wool gab black straight skirt with patch pockets and cute front button detail and a front pleat: looks expensive; I would wear it; a cute little Lanvin 50’s style Balenciaga trapeze crop jacket with covered buttons and full sleeves $59. This jacket is everywhere. Buy up lots of leggings $19 and some cute crop trenches in a grey cotton wrinkle fabric , with short puff sleeves and epaulettes, also in navy and stone and very similar to the Cue and other ones around last year ; $150 ( The crop trench was The item du jour way back in 06). There are cute little simple round neck grey marle dresses in a wrinkle fabric $129; a short sleeve dress with a wide neck almost box sack shape ( so flattering… Not) and a very nice silver lurex V neck sweater dress $99. Check out the groovy and gorgeous navy knit dress with short puff sleeves, a self belt and a flared skirt $89; also in a grey knit too. There are groovy dark denim skinny jeans $89; knit sweater dresses with long sleeves in black $79; and a scoop neck , cap sleeve dress with a bubble skirt in a grey marle….love it. You can wear it now while it’s warm but then later over a white T or over a black poloneck in winter. It has a lining under the bell skirt so it hangs well $99. Also a great buy is the black silky nylon short drawstring parka without a hood in a loose shape, way cool with patch pockets $149. In accessories I see awful white shoes and pale short crunchy prate boots. Please No one except Kate Moss can get away with atrocities such as. So just buy the marc Jacobs style black patent flats with the all important toe cleavage instead for $99. Also the bags are pretty good as reported last week.
Wanted Shoes:

There are a few things here worth checking out: I spy an anorak without a hood, belted, 3 quarter length though it looks almost a bit too ‘country’ as opposed to wearing it city side with hosiery and platforms a la Prada $269. Also I see a chic little navy satin square neck dress with shoes string straps, simple pleats and black grosgrain ribbon , cut off the lace trim on the hem to make it modern $279. There is a fab crossover ballet/drape/wrap top, it’s big oversized, in a light wool $129.

Veronica Maine;
It’s so very Marni here with a dash of Prada. After drooling in the Marni store in Double Bay and of course praying at the alter of the Prada Store it’s astonishing that it is so similar. But at least they have great taste! Bless. So what to buy? As I often advise it can be trick y to wear because Marni is not really sexy but there are some great pieces. Pick #1 is a shell top in light wool gab with a high pleat neckline and cute cap sleeves, slightly boxy shape and thin pockets, very flattering and perfect for this weather. I love it! Wear it right now and don’t we love that idea? There are some pussy bow cotton blouses that are very fashion but only the young can wear it other wise Miss Potter will be staring back at you in the mirror.$159. Beware of the school girl look. Check out the multi pleat chocolate chiffon skirt to the knee $219 ; the poets shirts with bell sleeves in cream $139; and I love the Khaki taffeta roll up sleeve parka about $250. It has no hood but why? I love a hood and I am not sure why I see the parka everywhere hoodless. This season is all about the hood. It gives it the sporty feel that is important and takes into a more relaxed look. Sporty is the big look next season so invest in a parka now. It might even rain. Also buy the black poloneck stretch knit $99; the belted dress with a small round collar and drawstring hem and sleeves $259 and the wool ¾ sleeve cute trapeze jacket $329. Plus lots more. The kits here are fabulous.

Warm Salad of Beetroot, Pear, Fetta and Walnuts

Warm Salad of Beetroot, Pear, Fetta and Walnuts
What a delicious idea! What a gorgeous mix of colours! My clever gourmande friends served this recipe on summer holidays and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. All you do is roast it all up with a sprinkling of sugar and watch as the Fetta melts and the walnuts caramelise into a perfect dish. Serve with a BBQ and settle down to a casual lunch sitting under cool trees on a hot summer’s day..

You need:
6 Pears
A cup or more of Walnuts
6 Beetroot
2 tabs of Sugar
½ packet of Fetta
Olive oil

• Preheat the oven to about 180 to 200
• Chop the pears into bite size chunks and throw into baking dish
• Apply rubber gloves; you are about to handle beetroot.
• Chop, wash and/or peel the beetroot
• Toss Beetroot into baking dish
• Check manicure is not damaged, take off gloves
• It’s time for wine, whatever time it is
• Chop the fetta and flake it over the pears and beetroot.
• Sprinkle the brown sugar over all the ingredients
• Toss on a few glugs of olive oil
• Give it a good tossing with your hands to mix the oil and the sugar through it all
• Pour in a little water on the bottom of the baking tray to keep it all moist. Moist is important what ever you do in life.
• Apply the leftover beetroot stain on your fingers to your lips for a quick spruce up
• Bake in the oven until it all seems cooked. How long is that? Perhaps an hour.
• Watch as the walnuts caramelise and the pears seem to melt into the fetta and the beetroot
• Serve warm or even cool as a perfect little accessory to BBQ lamb.
• Superb

The Plot: 2006 Boston. Bored numb-to-life housewife and mother finds husband wanking with undies on his face over porn sites. Ewww. She heads to Kiddies playground. Meets handsome and very buffed house husband. He is studying for the law exam. Decides to study her instead. Start mad passionate affair. His wife is perfect. She is not. Meanwhile Kooky and creepy pedophile who lives with elderly mother lurks at the local swimming pool. Becomes creepier. Becomes even more creepier. Bad things happen. Love affair continues. Hot steamy sex. Wife becomes suspicious. More creepy things happen. Will love find a way? The end
Acting: “Clearly one of the best of the year with multiple Oscar-caliber performances, especially by the brilliant Kate Winslet.” tonymedley.com. “ As the deranged and tortured Ronald, Jackie Earle Haley is appallingly creepy, meaning he’s perfect. His unstable character lingers in your mind. While you’re watching, he seems to be a dirty bomb of perverse violence” Arizona Daily Star. “The main reason to watch is Winslet, who brings flesh-and-blood dimension to Perrotta’s central character”. Daily News.
Photography: Fabulous and quirky especially the underwater shots at local swimming pool
Design: It’s American suburbia: Kate Winslet’s house is all American over done Chintz. Nothing to drool over.
Wardrobe: Not remarkable. It’s all boring suburban Jeans, tops and dresses.
Salon de Beaute: Kate Winslet is bare faced, fresh and lovely. Jennifer Connelly as the wronged wife has lot of black eyeliner and slick hair and looks gorgeous. Botox: Kate Winslet: No.Jennifer Connelly: Yes. FIFi: Huge dose to get through all the creepy bits
Waterproof Mascara: This is bitingly funny and darkly humourous. Like your mascara. A few applications should do the trick.
Bloodnguts: There is one scene when it is a close your eyes or you will see a lot of blood scenario
Mind drifted to shopping: when the guys play American football. Boring
Smokin’ smooches: Hot! Hot! Hot!
Car chases. Not really
Rename It: Love, Pain and the Whole Damned Thing
Best Review: “Todd Fields’ superb film adaptation of the novel by Tom Perrotta result is challenging, accessible and hard to stop thinking about” .A.O. Scott, New York Times OR “ Impressively directed, sharply written and beautifully shot drama with superb performances from the entire cast.” ViewLondon
Best Worst Review: “ Sexual deviates become heroes. This film is excrement on celluloid” .Outtakes With Fiore
