“Normally, people tend to shut off their ambitions and competitive thinking because it doesn’t help them much in normal life but in the movie business you’ve constantly got to prove yourself. “ What do I know about marriage? I think I’ve learned that both people have to really want to be there. I’m figuring it out for myself as I go along,” J.Lo on herself (the operative word) ( not normal)

“If I’d wanted a bimbo, I would have married Paris Hilton ” Nick Lachey on his wife Jessica Simpson. ( slapped).

Florals, florals and more florals

This summer is all about florals, florals and more florals. And next summer is all about florals too, now that I’ve seen the shows just on in Milan and New York. But don’t be overwhelmed by too many flowers (save that for George Clooney when he goes crazy on your birthday) No, for the moment just grab a pretty floral top to throw on with jeans, your favourite black pencil skirt and those new narrow or baggy cargoes that are lurking around your wardrobe (and about to jump out big time.). I suggest you indulge in the best one around, the sublime Alessandro dell’Aqua chiffon butterfly print in a gorgeous soft blue (or pink if you must). Next week I will cover the cheapbutchic version!
$925 from Como, new at 74 Queen St ,Woollahara

SK-II Signs Treatment Moisturiser and Facial Treatment Essence

Hands up who is looking for a miracle anti cure which doesn’t involve anesthetics or injections or putting a bag over our head. All of that is so scary it gives me wrinkles just thinking about it. So I was so thrilled to try the new skincare line, SK-II has the gorgeous Cate Blachett as it’s Australian face. It has a secret ingredient, Pitera, discovered by a monk in a Japanese sake factory (hic) where all the workers had beautiful hands. I’m more into having a beautiful face and I have become quite addicted to the Sign Treatment Moisteriser and the Facial Treatment Essence. Not sure about the age defying factors, I have to get old first, but my skin is softer and clearer and feels fantastic. (And I’ve taken the bag off my head.)

SK-II Signs Treatment Moisturiser $188, Facial Treatment Essence $175 from David Jones.

Issue 57

Milan fashion week is on! Watch out for the Alessandra Facchinetti’s debut show for Gucci on Style.com. Paris starts on Monday and here;s the scoop from WWD on what’s hot and new shops to check out:
Painted pink and packed with vintage jewelry, shoes, kimonos, slinky lingerie and brands like Gilles Dufour and Japan’s Bapy, Madame André is run by Chloé Para, a former fashion editor at Numero magazine who’s married to the popular Paris graffiti artist known as André. (André is also behind the offbeat Black Block shop opened last year at the Palais de Tokyo contemporary art museum.)
Ramdane Touhami’s Bureau Politique shop on the Rue des Ciseaux, on the Left Bank, also captures the indie spirit. With a log-cabin facade, it hardly looks like a clothing shop. But inside it’s studiously chic with polished hardwood floors, antique chandeliers and shelves covered in tartan fabric.
On the nearby Rue Bonaparte, Mona Blonde has opened Mona, a 1,500-square-foot shop stocking clothes from Lanvin, Alexander McQueen and Azzedine Alaïa, as well as shoes from Michel Vivien and Pierre Hardy. With no exterior markings, it’s a discreet presence just off Saint-Germain. Former Philippe Stark underling Kristian Gavoille designed it with simple sophistication, including white leather stools and splashes of red on the walls.
Galeries Lafayette’s teen floor — dubbed VO — boasts a streetwear ambiance, has a resident DJ installed in a camper and a “custom studio” where shoppers can customize their purchases and “XXL” fitting rooms for groups of friends to try on clothes together. There is a “denim bar” with about 20 brands; and a “must-have alley” to find the latest hot styles. A cafe has washing machines where customers can sip a smoothie while doing laundry.
Celesta, in the Marais, is a cool store for newborns to age eight. “The 3,000-square-foot emporium also sells toys and is equipped with giant televisions blasting nonstop cartoons to keep the kiddies occupied” .( educational!?)
Guy Savoy, strikes again with Le Chiberta, a chic new bistro.
Situated off Avenue George V, the Marquis de Sers Hotel has received an overhaul to restore 19th-century details, check out the divine panoramic suites. Merci, at http://www.hoteldesers.com
Alaïa will finally unveil his long-awaited 3-room hotel! ( yes 3?!) — named after the address, 5 Rue de Moussy — Meanwhile, Alaïa himself oversaw every detail of the hotel, from the multi-branch Serge Mouille lamps to the placement of furniture by Jean Prouvé and Pierre Paulin. The 1,300-square-foot suites, which rent for 400 euros ($490) a night, were conceived as apartments, with complete kitchens, flat-screen TVs and Internet access. The staff serves continental breakfast, and can arrange for food deliveries from the neighborhood. (The hotel looks gorgeous but I can’t find a website sorry.) This month, he opened a shop at his friend Rei Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market emporium, which mixes Comme des Garçons brands with other designers in a market-like, industrial setting. There, Alaïa sells not only his shapely, sexy clothes, but also select pieces of mid-century furniture and jewelry
“Le Cas du Sac,” an exhibition of more than 400 bags at the Museum of Fashion and Textiles here through Feb. 20. ( ‘Carried Away.”) Co-organized by Hermès, it traces the bag’s evolution in civilizations across the world, from the Dark Ages to modern times

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Don’t be put off that Oprah has done this in her book club, it’s a great book and has suddenly appeared on everyone favourite book list. It’s set in 1959 and about “Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist, who takes his four young daughters, his wife, and his mission to the Belgian Congo — a place, he is sure, where he can save needy souls. But the seeds they plant bloom in tragic ways within this complex culture. In addition to poisonous snakes, dangerous animals, and the hostility of the villagers to Nathan’s fiery take-no-prisoners brand of Christianity, there are also rebels in the jungle and the threat of war in the air. Could things get any worse? They can and they do”: Oh dear, but hang in there because once you get through the first chapters you can’t put it down.

The Christmas List:
Oscar Night : 75 Years of Hollywood Parties by Graydon Carter
Here we go, another fabulous, glamorous book to put on your must-have-and-getting-very long-Christmas-Book List. I think the title says it all but here is everything you need to know about partying like a movie star “ Giorgio Armani will sponsor the book, and Vanity Fair had a launch party at the Armani Privé nightclub during Milan Fashion Week. Also, in a special promotion, everyone who buys the book will get a VIP pass to Vanity Fair’s annual Oscar party at Morton’s. (OK, we made that last part up.) ( from WWD)

Soba Noodles with sesame seeds

Soba Noodles with sesame seeds
This an old Nigella Lawson recipe from her UK Vogue days. Delicious on their own or just as sumptuous with some seared salmon, you can serve them cold too.
For 2 you need
75g sesame seeds
250 g soba buckwheat noodles
5 teasp soy sauce
2 teasp rice vinegar
2 teasp honey
2 teasp sesame oil
5 spring onions

·Toast the sesame seeds in a dry pan over high heat until they have a gorgeous golden tan and then tip in a bowl and shaft them to one side to cool down
·Cook the noodles in boiling water till they are um, cooked.
·Drain and run under cold water.Nigella says plunge them in cold water but no one likes to be plunged into iced water ( except lime and gin).
·I say leave there to drain under cold water ( there’s a drought on remember)
·Speaking of which, time to pour a drink!
·In the bowl you are going to serve the noodles in, mix up the soy, rice vinegar, honey and sesame oil. Double the quantity if you need to
Ditto with gin and tonic
·Slice up the spring onions into chic, little slices and toss into bowl with the cooled drained noodles.
·Give them a good old toss, then sprinkle the sesame seeds on
·Oh go on toss them all again so the noodles are just dripping with the sauce.
·Let them all marinate there in their own juices while you whip some salmon or quelque chose comme ca.
·The flavours will get even better after they’ve had a little quiet sit.
·Serve up with the salmon
·Sublime! You will be addicted. Nigella says “I just lift the bowl to my face, fork furiously and slurp”
We all love to fork furiously!

The Terminal by Stephen Spielberg
Don’t listen to all the tough reviews of this movie, The Terminal is actually a really funny, laugh out movie. Yes, it’s a bit smultzy and soppy, but what do you expect from Stephen Spielberg and a movie which is a cross between Castaway and ET? The New York Times said “the plot is a mess of runny egg yolks and artificial sweeteners that Mr. Spielberg has somehow cooked into a light and pleasing soufflé” I love Souffle. The movie is about Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) who,“ on his first visit to New York from the imaginary Eastern European republic of Krakozia, arrives at J.F.K. just as a military coup abolishes his government and renders him effectively stateless. A web of bureaucratic regulations strands him at the airport for a year ”.Anyway how can I resist a movie that encourages shopping? When Victor asks what to do while waiting in the airport, he is told “ Shop, of course!” Oh, Yes, the product placement here is scary. More interesting is that the whole airport is actually a complete movie set and “ Spielberg commissioned a full-sized terminal, 60 feet tall and nearly 100,000 square feet. It was built at Hangar 704, a former B-1 bomber facility that once housed the Columbia shuttle. It has 58,000 square feet of polished granite flooring from China and 112,000 square feet of glass windows. Rather than create airfield views using CGI they opted for a 31,200-square-foot scenic backdrop—the largest ever—lit from both front and back to simulate changing weather, seasons, and times of day. It was also equipped with thousands of tiny lights “so that when you had a night scene you could see runways lit in the distance.” Incredible! Great for a laugh, it’s the kind of movie you’d see on a plane…

US ELLE Oct: Beyonce on the cover and a story inside about her. Read about Billy Crudup and his new movie, Stage Beauty where he fell in love with Claire Danes, about the Heinz/Kerry clan helping John Kerry (good luck) and a great interview with Jane Lauder (who unfortunately has a husband in the Bush administration.) She suggests tips for frequent fliers: “ I always carry Havaianas flip-flops in my purse. When you go through security, throw them on and then you don’t have to walk through barefoot or in your socks” mmm
Vanity Fair Oct: Jude Law is on the cover. “He has 6 films on the way, newly bacherlized, a one man British invasion” Read about the 10th annual new establishment list; The guys who set up Google (who have a world map lighting up who is using google at any moment ) Oprah, who doesn’t have a cell phone and Meg Whitman from Ebay who has $1.1billion in shares. Then read about the mystery (or not) of Diana’s death or on a lighter note see Giselle nude on the beach (Leo must be pissed)
WallPaper Oct: This is a big issue and is the interiors special. We love the scoop on global shopping and the crazy sci fi house that ‘fell to earth’ in the hills outside Seville by Emilio Ambasz, and the story on glamourous hotels in Africa. A great issue.
The New Yorker fashion issue: “Has an Irving Penn portfolio; Nick Paumgarten catches up with photographers Mert and Marcus on the island of Ibiza; Specter looks at Paris restaurant Davé, and Larissa MacFarquhar talks to Georges de Paris, tailor to the President. The issue also contains a story about Teresa Heinz Kerry, by The New Yorker’s fashion writer Judith Thurman” wwd
