“ I love to over spend. Then I have to work harder to make more money, It makes me better at my job. Guilty feelings about clothes are totally unnecessary” Karl Lagerfeld agreeing with my philosophy on life.
“ I would rather have cheap food than cheap clothes” Mathilde Agostinelli the Prada Publicist in Paris on how why I am getting so fat.
“I think it was organic. It’s good for the skin,” Anna Wintour, outside Chanel in Paris, when an antifur activist shoved a tofu pie into her face ( how cheap)
“Wear more fur.” Wintour on being asked what actions she would take,
“ Even the doctor today - he was like, ‘Are you anorexic? Are you making yourself throw up? Are drugs involved?’ And I was like, ‘Are you saying this because you’ve read it in magazines? Because I don’t!’ But you know, I’m around girls, even in the movies, that are like, ‘I don’t feel good, I just ate a lot, I’m going to throw up.’” Lindsay Lohan (cheap Tofu anyone?)
“A short stay in a low-security prison could be the new ashram, You’d get a nice break from the rat race - and you’d really be able to relax because it’s probably one of the few places in the world that nobody can reach you,” Lesley Jane Seymour, the self-professed, constantly stressed editor of Marie Claire magazine. Cheap too! (Marie Claire could send their editors for a week, just to test out this hot new trend) .
“My life is about much more than what my cushions are like or what theatre show I should go to. It’s really poncey. I just think that they should leave straight people alone, ” Boy George on TV’s ‘Queer Eye ‘ ( and on spending his life doing much more like doing his makeup and hair)
“ I heard you were gay. Let’s get a room and prove that wrong,” one hapless suitor told Marcia star of Desperate Housewives ( who was forced to release a statement insisting she was straight)
“Sorry. I’d much rather be gay than sleep with you just to prove I wasn’t.” Her reply
“ We hit a little bit of reality, hardcore, after the first three weeks. But we handled it fine, and now things are starting to go really smooth,” Britney on her marriage ( hardcore? I thought that was Paris Hilton?)
“Sometimes I think, ‘Is he really out there, or am I just never going to find him?’ I just have to leave it to God, I really do.” Naomi Campbell ( even supermodels can’t get a date) Not angry just disappointed.
“This nine foot creature walked in and I went and shook her hand, saying, ‘Hello. Eamonn. How are you doing?’ She replied, ‘Iman.’ I said, ‘Hello… Eamonn.’ She screamed, ‘Iman!’ She started hitting me and slapping me, yelling, ‘I’m Iman.’ I said, ‘I know who you are – I’m just trying to tell you, I’m Eamonn!’ She thought I thought I was pronouncing her name wrongly.” EAMONN HOLMES on meeting Iman ( repeat after me: Eamon and Iman Eamon and Iman)
“Roberts Struggling with Large Bust “ headline on Imdb on Julie Roberts
“It boosted my confidence no end. I’ve had a face job and a new nose.” Ozzy Osbourne ( but no Brain job?) Ozzy struggling with brain.

Bodum Pavina glasses

After working at shopping all day there is nothing better than coming home to settle down, unpack all your purchases, try them on and admire yourself for hours on end in the mirror. And let’s face it, it’s hard and exhausting work thinking about your wardrobe and what goes with what. Which is why you need help at this strenuous time by reaching for your best friend: wine. But why drink out of daggy glasses when you can have the new ever so chic glasses from Bodum with a double walls layer of heat resistant glass? “Hand made and mouth blown, they cleverly feature two glass walls, trapping air between the walls to provide insulation, keeping hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold” With their own climate control they are perfect for drinking lattes too so you don’t get your fingers burnt. I’ll drink to that.
$39.95 for 2, Pavina glasses from Bodum

SK-II Facial Treatment Mask

At the end of summer you look in the mirror and wish it was the beginning of summer. Summer 1990. So here’s a hint: stop looking in the mirror (or take off your glasses: out of focus is good) and indulge in the luxurious SK-II facial treatment mask. Not as good in the results department as plastic surgery but a lot less painful and so relaxing. It is “a deeply intensive moisture boosting mask that deeply hydrates the skin just like a facial leaving your skin radiant”. Radiant? I felt radiant just lying down for 15 minutes with my eyes closed in the middle of the day. But because it actually is a real mask you put on your face, it does leave your skin will feeling great, and looking revived. It’s a miracle!

$25 each or 6 for $132 SK-II Facial Treatment Mask from David Jones.

Want the best report and (sometimes) humorous take on winter fashion shows in Paris, New York and Milan? I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Go to The New York Times and listen to Cathryn Horn talk about the shows and watch the slide show. It’s a very intelligent, interesting overview and her accent is extraordinary. You will chuckle listening to her pronounce Faccinetti (as in Alessandra of Gucci). Also click on her video of Marc Jacobs’ show in New York: Fascinating Fashionista fun. It’s a must click.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
This is the top of the Amazon bestseller list and also the New York Times too, ( mmm is that good or bad? The Da Vince code is in there too) but it sounds like a great read and very interesting. No, it’s not about gossip, fashion or food ( good god) but about Afghanistan. C’mon keep reading…. “ In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini provides an educational and eye-opening account of a country’s political turmoil–in this case, Afghanistan–while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. At a time when Afghanistan has been thrust into the forefront of America’s collective consciousness (”people sipping lattes at Starbucks were talking about the battle for Kunduz”), Hosseini offers an honest, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, but always heartfelt view of a fascinating land. Perhaps the only true flaw in this extraordinary novel is that it ends all too soon.

·Whizz up the garlic, chicken, coriander, egg white and ½ of soy (2 tabs) soy sauce in the food whizzer, don’t over process please.
·Watch the manicure because now you are going to stick your hands in this mushy mixture and roll it into balls in your palms,
·Se that was fun. You can delegate that bit if you don’t want to get dirty.
·Pop the dumplings mush on a plate and put in the fridge while you get the broth organised
·Check the fingernails, that wasn’t so bad….
·Now get a big saucepan and fill it with the chicken stock, lemongrass, ginger, chilli, and star anise with 2 cups of water
·Bring to boil then turn to simmer for about 5 minutes
·Put the rice on now because the dumplings will take 10 mins to cook and then bobs your uncle
·Now pop those dumplings into a steamer over the broth and steam them for about 10 minutes
·Now carefully toss them into the stock and then add the lime juice, the rest of the soy, the sesame oil, and the fish sauce into the broth too.
·Voila all is ready!
·Serve a couplings of dumplings in each bowl, bobbing around in the broth and add some chives or herbs for a bit of snazzy garnish

The Door in the Floor …with Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger

Imagine a gorgeous, wooden, stylish, arty beach house in the Hamptons with an outdoor shower, a lawn going to the beach and a painters studio And in the middle of it all, Jeff Bridges wondering around in a caftan , drinking wine and tucking into huge slabs of cheese, painting, writing and carrying on like a big, charismatic cheeky monkey. Oh, what a visual feast this movie is! Oh the house! the furniture! the photography and the clothes! The big spunk Jeff Bridges! So what if he looks fat and old and middle aged (don’t we all?). The New York Times says ‘Jeff Bridges offers perhaps the wittiest and richest piece of screen acting by an American man so far this year “ (and that was last year) Warning: it is not a romantic comedy. Does it have romance ? Yes! Does it have violence? no (if you don’t count a crazy woman chasing Jeff Bridges down the street with a knife). Is this funny? Yes (if you count a crazy woman chasing Jeff Bridges down the street). Is it beautifully written and directed? Yes and Yes. An adaptation of a John Irving book ‘A widow for a year’ it is a quirky, deep, tragic and sometimes funny story about “ a long-married couple still reeling from the deaths, some years earlier, of their two teenage sons. Their 4-year-old daughter, Ruth born after the car accident that killed her brothers, but rather than help her parents move beyond their grief she traps them inside it, and herself as well. ” But don’t get put off by the sad story, just read these reviews instead: : “ a film to wrap around yourself like a blanket, huddling from life’s harshness and tasting its riches.”.
“ A beautifully acted examination of the bedeviling and perversely inspiring legacy of family tragedy, it’s one of the most sophisticated American films of the year.” OR “The richly rewarding film is funny, sexy, tragic, touching and sometimes kind of sweetly bizarre”

US Harpers Bazaar March:
With Gwen Stefani on the cover, don’t get it mixed up with the Aust Version; Read the fashion advice column by Karl Lagerfeld ( see Quote de la quote) who gives great advice such as ”Never lend to the poor” .Read the how to wear it guide on jackets ,full skirts ,baggy pants and dresses. Laugh reading Simon Doonan’s story on fashion’s new loving feeling “ that backstabbing bitchiness so often associated with the world of style has evaporated as quickly as you could say “ pass the Kabbalah water” , be amused by Dontatella Versace’s ‘why don’t you column’ i.e “why don’t you wear a gold python leather trench over your gym clothes?” Mmm why don’t you? Read Candace Bushnell on the trend of 50’s lady like dressing and how it is a sexist plot “ all those nipped in waists and tight sweaters are demure, demure whispers compliant ’ Checkout the peace movement shoot by Peter Lindbergh, and be horrified by the shoot of Dolce Gabbana as super heros with Naomi Camnpbell as catwoman. A good issue
UK Conde Nast Traveller March :
A great issue! Read about the gourmet driving tour of Bordeaux (see Globetrotter), read about the top cheapo hotels in Rome , read about Bill’s café by Neale Whitaker ( from Vogue entertaining etc). There is a fab story about Montreal ( you want to go there) and read and pray you can one day stay at one of the 20 best Villas on the GreeK Islands.
THe New Yorker
Read John Seabrook’s profile of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in the new style issue of The New Yorker, Gabbana is appearing in an Italian dating reality show called “La Sottile Linea Rosa,” or “The Thin Pink Line,” playing a “fairy godfather who drops in from time to time with fashion advice. He can be seen holding a magic wand, sitting in front of dozens of burning candles of different lengths, with leopard-print wallpaper in the background.” (Is it too much to hope for Trio to import this show and slap on a few English subtitles?) The amicable Dolce and Gabbana who are splitsville as a couple now travel together with their new respective boyfriends, “They’re sort of the Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee of fashion,” Also in the issue: a six-page series of Grecian mosaics by Michael Roberts; Daniel Zalewski’s piece on Rem Koolhaas; a meditation on the creation of Hermès’ latest scent, and Nancy Franklin’s look at two other addictive fashion reality shows, “America’s Next Top Model” and “Project Runway.” —WWD
