Stripe Cotton Purse

Yesterday was Bastille Day and what better excuse to celebrate all things French. Which is why I had a coup de foudre and fell in love with the gorgeous, chic, little striped fabric purses I found at Ici et La. In all sorts of fabulous colours and cute cotton fabrics they are just perfect to throw in your handbag full of your emergency makeup. Because there is nothing worse than finding yourself without lip gloss and then struggling for hours, virtually naked, trying to find your black makeup bag in the black bottom of your black bag. Vive La Couleur! (At least till next winter.)

$20 Stripe Cotton Purse from

Chanel Pochette

The wonderful thing about going into the Chanel Boutique is that there is no subtitles. It’s all very understandable and in a language we can all understand: luxury shopping. Funnily enough when I was in there I saw a divine little fur bag that really was talking to me, in fact it was screaming ‘Buy me, Buy me.’ Bless. I so wanted to go home with the fabulous, little, black fur pochette with a snazzy Chanel No 5 jewel of perfume bottle hanging from it. Tres, Tres chic

YSL French Nail Polish

If you want to look as chic and French as possible, there is a way to do it without giving up eating and taking up smoking and snarling. It’s called a French polish. Head to YSL for very subtle and very glamorous nail polish called Porcelain Rose, it has just a tiny hint of pink and white and has no calories whatsoever. Chic Alors.

$37 French Nail Polish from David Jones.

Picasso: Art Can Only Be Erotic by Diana Widmaier Picasso
This book written by Picasso’s granddaughter has had rave reviews in all the magazines and it sounds fascinating if you are interested in art and love ( who isn’t?). ‘Pablo Picasso lived life as he painted it—with sensual energy and abandon. Nearly every woman whom he loved has been immortalized in his work. This book follows Picasso’s artistic development as expressed in more than ninety erotically charged works which are displayed alongside fragments from Picasso’s love letters and his revealing observations about the role of sensuality in his life. Mais Oui .

Poulet Sauté aux olives de Provence

Poulet Sauté aux olives de Provence (from Elizabeth David, French Provincial cooking)

This is a lovely coq au vin style dinner with white wine and olives, tomatoes and basil can be whipped up for dinner after work or is snazzy enough for a dinner party.
For 2 big eaters or 4 small

You need 4 pieces of chicken on the bone
Flour for dusting
1 lemon and juice
4 garlics
Cup of olive oil
4 large ripe tomatoes
2 anchovy fillets
A sprig or 2 each of thyme, marjoram and basil
A small glass of wine
120 g of black olives de Provence or Greek Calamata
Salt et Poivre
Serve with a green salad and small potatoes

·Season each piece of chicken with salt and pepper
·Rub with lemon juice and lemon ,yes get your nails dirty doll.
·And insert a small piece of garlic and a basil leaf under the skin of each piece of chicken
·How chic
·Time to pop on a pinny or you’ll get flour on your Ferragamos
·Dust the chicken with flour
·Pour a wine for your self and one for the pot
·Find an ordinary frying pan with a lid ( no designer here) then
·heat up the olive oil so it’s quite hot and
·Add the chicken pieces skin side down.
·Toss in the lemon halves to add a bit of flavour.
·Let them become so golden and gorgeous as a camel Prada bag and make sure you turn them to get the look all over.
·Turn them over again, pop on the lid and turn down the heat so they just sit there cooking away for about 20 mins (Turn the chicken from time to time if you so desire).
·Now after 20 mins transfer the whole lot into a baking dish with a lid, and put in a very low oven (on the floor? No, a low temperature) so it keeps warm while you make the sauce
·Hint; Keep the frying pan and juices there to use for the sauce
·Chop up the tomatoes.
·Pound the anchovy with the 3 other garlic cloves (Liz says 2, I say more garlic the better) in a mortar and pestle till it’s a lovely paste.
·Grab the sprig of herbs and take the leaves off
·De stone the olives if you need to
·Now Liz says to make the sauce in the baking dish with the chicken but I say make it in the frying pan and then pour over the chicken.
·So grab the frying pan and pop it on a medium heat and throw in the cup of wine
·Watch it sizzle and bubble toil and trouble and reduce a bit then
·Add the anchovy paste and stir well
·Add the tomatoes and the herbs, so pretty
·Let it simmer till the sauce looks thick …or if you are impatient just wait 5 secs and then
·Throw in the olives and voila!
·Get the chicken out of the oven and pour the sauce over it and let it have a little sit to soak it up for a couple of minutes while you seat every one and get the salad.
·Pour some more wine and rip up some crusty bread
·‘For serving arrange the chicken on a long dish on top of the sauce” says Elizabeth the guru (you’d better do as she says)
Delicieux!

The Beat My Heart Skipped…Director Jacques Audiard and screenwriter Tonino Benacquista, who made READ MY LIPS, team up again.
The Plot: It’s a French remake of the 1978 film ‘Fingers’ where Harvey Keitel ‘played a tortured soul trapped between his love of the piano and his involvement with the mob’ In this version a loner, ne-’er-do-well whose abusive father is one of the dodgey Bros, gets in with the wrong crowd in Paris and then rediscovers his passion for playing the piano. Bless
Who: Romain Duris Niels Arestrup and Linh Dan Pham ( who?)
Acting; Superbe, this guy is incredible. Can they really be acting?
Interiors: You will get glimpses of gorgeous French apartments with beautiful floorboards and fabulous windows but it’s basically all grotty and gritty and not the pretty Paris we know and love.
Photography: all handheld camera, with incredible shots and amazing angles
Blood’n’ guts: Mais oui, Trouble is when you hide your head in your hands you can’t read the subtitles. Merde. So you are forced to watch bloodn guts and bashings. Not nice.
Aliens or a Tom Cruise sighting? Not one
Special Effects: Yes, if you call multi dimensional characters and poetic moments special
Smokin’ smooches; Well. they smoke in France EVERYWHERE; all the time; in restaurants, on the street, in bed. Definitely smooches and they’re smoking.
Valium: Forget the botox you need a valium to calm the beating of your heart in this thriller.
Best review: “ Affirms the best cinema has to offer: exciting acting, beautiful music and cinematography, great writing and a lack of condescending to the audience” FILMJERK.COM
When Harry met Sally romance Richter scale: It’s all here, this is a romantic uplifting movie interspersed with moments of extreme violence. Sounds like shopping in the sales.
See it or donate to the Save Katie fund: Film noir at its best there is a depth in film only seen in biggest Prada bag. A fantastic change from all those DingBats and War of the Warped. Formidable!
