“Interestingly, the ones that get the most attention are the ones where you think, ‘Wait, what did she do?’ Paris and Lindsay are the biggest paparazzi draw but their list of accomplishments is infinitesimally small. My dog is more accomplished.” Simon Doonan on celebs at Fashion Week …(what a bitch).
“I used to think it was so bad, but it’s like, everyone has sex. I’m sure everyone has filmed a tape” Paris Hilton is very accomplished. (Doggy style).
“I don’t even really remember filming it. I was so out of it in that tape,” Paris trying to forget the sex tape won’t make it go away.
“She doesn’t seem to like my snoring, so she boots me out of bed. We’ve got four houses, but in every one of them I end up sleeping in the cleaning cupboard or the corridors ” Guy Ritchie is in the Dog house.
“We kind of just dove into the love scenes and dove out again just as fast as we could” Jake Gyllenhaal on his love scenes with Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain (out of it).
‘I hope it will penetrate prejudices,’ Ang Lee on his gay film Brokeback Mountain (maybe penetrate is not the right word ). .
“The worst part about the fashions shows is people don’t have any manners. It’s push, push, push and no one says, ‘Excuse me.’” Mary J Blige complaining that people at fashion shows don’t behave as they do at rock concerts.
“I read the Kabbalah books and I meditate on them. They are all in Hebrew. I don’t understand everything. But it’s kind of OK that you don’t.” Britney just stick to wearing the orange string bracelet and shut up.
“There was more discussion about Superman’s ‘package’ than anything else on the suit, Was it too big? Was it not big enough? Was it too pointy? Too round?’ A producer on the new Superman movie ( too pointy?) .
“Not big. Ten-year-olds will be seeing this movie.” The final choice on the package…( It’s nice to know that Superman’s schlong will be kid-safe. Had it been deemed “too pointy,” toy safety groups might have required sales-killing warning stickers affixed to a wide variety of merchandise).
“I think I may need a bathroom break?” Dubya needs to ask Condelezza Rice if he can pee during the security council meeting at The UN. (Go! infact keeping going and don’t come back ) see it at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-1781796,00.html

Target Print Skirts

Thank the Lord the whole Boho chic gypsy look is over. Black and the new simplicity is back. Well, it will be by next winter anyway. Which is why you shouldn’t waste any more money on ruffled skirts or anything with too much bling and crap all over it. So here’s the scoop: when no one is looking throw on your dark oversized sunglasses and tip toe quietly into Target to snatch up a couple of their black and white printed gypsy skirts for about $24. Sweet and pretty they have a scattering of sequins and look ever so Easton Pearson. Then if anybody asks just say it’s vintage. (And throw that spare $500 to your Prada bag fund.)

Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer

I have discovered beauty’s Mr. Sheen. But you don’t need to spray this one on. Dermalogica’s Daily Resurfacer is very clever. Every pot comes with 36 little hermetically-sealed pouches which you open and sponge over your face. These pouches have lots of goodies in there: ‘Hydroxy acids that apparently gently dissolve dead skin cells and stimulate cell renewal, Japanese Unshiu Citrus Peel that helps to control melanin production - ie. shocking sun spots – to naturally brighten and evening out skin tone, and Rooibos Extract that combines with Green Tea as a powerful antioxidant that soothes skin during the resurfacing process.’ After a couple of weeks of severe discipline making myself apply it every day my skin has started to feel smoother and look shinier. It’s a miracle! Now if I can only find some Mr. Muscle for the wrinkles.

$110 Daily Resurfacer from Ella Rouge or 1800 659 118.

Yes, the same week all the International Fashion Delegates are in New York for fashion week so too is the UN in session. (Go to First Class Fashion for al; the reviews of Fashion Week. See CNN for all the news on the UN! ).
The grand finale of the Diane von Furstenberg show at New York Fashion Week came to an abrupt end when a track of lights crashed to the floor just as the models were walking their last lap. Hilary Alexander, fashion editor of London’s Daily Telegraph; Amy Astley, and editor in chief of Teen Vogue were injured. Alexander was visibly shaken, and the International Herald Tribune’s Suzy Menkes and Vanity Fair’s Elizabeth Saltzman rushed to her side to comfort her. She left on a stretcher. “My Prada sweater was ripped to shreds. It could have been much worse. I was very lucky if you put it in perspective…I became a fashion victim.”
Brokeback Mountain, based on a story by E. Annie Proulx of two cowboys involved in a homosexual relationship, won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film.
Like last year’s “The Incredibles,” the chicest movie of 2005 may be an animated one, “Corpse Bride.” Tim Burton’s latest stop-motion-animation odyssey is about a buttoned-up bourgeois young man (voiced by Johnny Depp) who, after nearly ruining an arranged marriage to a high society but destitute woman (Emily Watson), finds himself accidentally engaged to a corpse (Helena Bonham Carter). The overtones are Gothic, the collars are high and the mood is gloomy. In short, it’s all very Marc Jacobs. WWD.
Fashion Rocks, the mammoth fund-raiser for Prince Charles’ youth charity, The Prince’s Trust, is decamping from London to Monaco. Scheduled for Oct. 17 — with Swarovski as the lead sponsor and Jerry Hall as the host — the lineup of designers includes Alexander McQueen, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Calvin Klein and Viktor & Rolf.
Angelina Jolie will be the new model for St. John .
Christian Lacroix, the first fashion designer to dress France’s prized fleet of high-speed trains, unveiled his designs of plush and futuristic seating pods in vivid red and purple.
Industrial designer Marc Newson has designed a line of colorful travel pieces for the high-end Black Label collection of Samsonite
Tyler Brûlé is moving on. BBC4 has canned his media-focused show, “The Desk,” and asked him instead to do a six-part, global series on the culture of shopping — a subject the inveterate store hound understands only too well. Brûlé will travel to six countries, including Russia, Sweden, Italy and Japan, to explore topics such as the daily shopping habits of denizens, and how and why brands evolve in certain countries
The latest scenester bar of choice in New York is Double Seven, nestled in the Meatpacking District. It’s is playing host to a slew of Euro-fabulous parties during fashion week

Matisse the Maste : A Life of Henri Matisse: by Hilary Spurling
This second volume of the biography of Matisse has had rave reviews in every magazine. ‘Spurling’s 10 years of work first on The Unknown Matisse covered the artist’s early years, then in this astonishing second act, she have yielded revelations factual, emotional, and spiritual. The story of Matisse is the story of his remarkable family and the responsive women who posed for him. And just as women shaped his art, they sustained his life, especially his extraordinary, long–suffering wife, Amelie; his heroic daughter, Marguerite; and his indomitable companion, Lydia Delectorskaya. Spurling charts every phase of Matisse’s ceaseless experimentation, especially his deceptively decorative Nice paintings of the 1920s and 1930s and his stunningly liberated cutouts. A must read. $26 ://www.amazon.com Publisher: Knopf (September 6, 2005)

Amanda de Cadenet’s photographs capture a subtle, ambiguous, and unconventional beauty. Very Hip.

First:
There’s not a lot to report on in this week so instead let’s get the inside scoop from WWD on what designers are showing for summer 06 at New York Fashion week: The key words? Romantic optimism and pragmatic chic. Marc Jacobs: Genuinely provocative fashion. Jacobs said he’s sick of the beachification of city style, that real fashion demands “a little more work.” Which made for an entertaining way to push fall’s major points — pretty sobriety and volume — more into the mainstream. Throughout, he stripped away girliness wherever possible (”I wanted to avoid frills, bows and disgustingly sweet things — the things I used to love”). Thus, fall’s tulle dirndls stiffened into A-line skirts over knife-pleated petticoats, huge smocks deflated into tentish coats and lace-veiled cardigans defrocked into cashmere sweatshirts. Marc by Marc Jacobs, Layering, of course, is a signature of this secondary line, and for spring, Jacobs topped unitards with everything from a parachute jacket to a floral-print silk dress. There were also arm-warmers, leggings, and stirrup pants, which, sadly, still aren’t ripe for a comeback. He used soft, cozy materials like French terry, cotton sateen, voile, and summer twill, in a palette of mostly pastels with shots of black and navy, and precious few on his signature zany prints. Proenza Schouler So much for minimalism. Not that they have ever endorsed austerity, but after this duo’s Arts and Crafts-inflected spring collection, the much buzzed-about trend may be dead in the water. Working in a shadowy palette of black, gray, silver, and white, the designers established a restricted silhouette: Michael Kors: The designer’s big mission was to tone down the flash without becoming a bore. To that end, he mixed austere tailoring with softer pieces, working in black, white and sober neutrals but touched with just the right amount of sparkle. The whole thing was a feast of pragmatic chic.Narciso Rodriguez: Many of Rodriguez’s clothes just looked too familiar. Given fashion’s new austerity — and the void left by Jil Sander and Helmut Lang — this could be a golden moment for Rodriguez. But first he needs to mine a little deeper for new ways to express his so-chic aesthetic. DKNY: “You know when you just want to feng shui and clean house?” asked Karan, Finally swinging away from embellishment to the nth degree, there was nary a jewel or bead to be seen. Still, as she was quick to point out, Karan hasn’t scrubbed away the sensuality or detail, though the latter was restricted to flat pleats on chiffon dresses and belts tied into bows that were more stark than sweet. Luella Bartley has been a member of the country-club set for years now, but she’s the sort of cardholder who’s always on the verge of getting kicked out for breaking the dress code. From start to finish, the clothes were dolled up with cheeky sky-high spectator pumps, men’s-style golf shoes and great big-buckled leather bags.

Chicken stir fry with snow peas

Chicken stir fry with snow peas …..from Charmaine Soloman

Need a quick stir fry recipe which actually tastes as good as the Thai restaurant around the corner? I think I’ve found it. Delicious and quick, you’ll feel so healthy eating this you might even pull out last years bikinis from the bottom drawer. And just because the recipe says snow peas doesn’t mean you can’t go crazy, and throw in bok choi, broccolini or even capsicum.

For 4 you need:
500 g chicken breasts
1 or 2 garlic cloves
½ teasp of grated ginger (more if you like ginger)
1 tabs light soy
1 tab dry sherry or Chinese cooking wine
a couple handfuls of snow peas
2 tabs peanut oil
4 tabs chicken stock or water
1 teasp of cornflour

·Cut the chicken into chic, little thin strips
·Slice up the garlic, grate the ginger and do what you want to the snow peas (eat a few or string them if you can be bothered).
·Pour a wine or two.
·Pop on the rice.
·Mix the chicken with the garlic, ginger, half the soy and half sherry.
·Blend the cornflour with 1 tabs of cold water to throw in at the end
·Boil some water and quickly drop the snow peas for a minute or two to cook (or steam them ). Charmaine says to throw them into iced water after to keep them bright and crunchy but that’s is far too difficult.
·Heat the oil in the wok and stir fry the chicken till it turns white. Hint: Don’t over cook because you will cook it a bit more in the stock.
·Throw in the remaining sherry, soy and the stock and let it simmer for about 2 mins.
·Have a little think about your summer wardrobe and the fact you have nothing to wear. Remember this is good. It means more shopping.
·Blend in cornflour and stir it until the sauce thickens a bit (but not as much as Britney’s waist).
·Toss in the snow peas and give it a good shake to mix it up.
·Serve it immediately with boiled rice
So good, so quick, so healthy (yes, you can sneak that chocolate for dessert)

issue 102

The Perfect Catch directed by The Farrelly Brothers (‘Something about Mary’)
The Plot: Daggy but sweet schoolteacher who is obsessed about baseball falls for high powered working girl. A chick flick with sport (so the guys see it too).
Who: Drew Barrymore, Jimmy Fallon
Acting: Drew can’t act but she is sweet as herself. Jimmy steals the show
Photography: It’s a movie so someone must have filmed something.
Interiors: The most exciting thing is the Robert Mapplethorpe shots on the wall of her apartment and some stylish sculpture. His place is a shrine to The Red Socks baseball team.
Wardrobe: I thought red socks were part of Marc Jacobs fall 02 collection until I saw his appartment. She loves beads and 50’s skirts. I see a Prada croc bag.
Salon de Beaute: We need some hair gel to get the movie happening.
Blood’nguts: I wanted to slash my wrists after watching all this sport.
Car chases: Oh, please a car chase would’ve been fun compared to all this sport. Yawn.
Smooches: Not enough (a good rom-com is equal parts smooches to sports).
Smokin’ Smooches: Zilch. It’s on rom-com autopilot
Movie Mistake: Drew Barrymore gets hit with the baseball right below her left eye; yet, when she is on Jimmy Fallon’s bed, it is her forehead that is swollen.
Botox for laugh lines? You never thought you’d feel nostalgic for the Farrelly fart jokes.
When Harry met Sally romance Richter scale: 6/10 if you have a little shut eye in the sporty bits.
Best review: “A dandy, heart-warming, fun-filled date movie - corny but charming.” Modamag.com
Worst review “[A] loud, obnoxious collection of pratfalls, testicle jokes, and vomit-eating dogs…”FLICK FILOSOPHER .
Rename it: It was based on the Nick Hornby book Fever Pitch
See it or donate to the Prada bag/save Katie fund? We saw a Prada bag in the movie. And there is something about Katie - she’s now changing her name to Kate Cruise. She needs our help! Watch this mildly amusing movie on DVD.
