First Class
The news from the runways of Paris for next Autumn/ winter 06:
WWD reportsChanel: To open, Lagerfeld rejuvenated the house staple — those evergreen tweeds — pairing narrow-cut coats with sprightly minis to match, all in a range that ran from tame to zany, as in a combo sparkling with tutti-frutti metallic camellias. Other innovations included a puff of a parka spliced with alternating bands of nappy tweed and nylon, and a sharp black coat bordered with golden bubbles. Lagerfeld’s array of pared-down, Sixties-ish sportswear looked just as fresh, with simple sweater dresses, jabot-tied blouses and even a cozy cape blooming with knit camellias. For evening he decked out dresses with tribal beaded breastplates and armored the shoulders of his coats with beaded medallions that clung like barnacles.
McQueen; Alexander McQueen’s fabulously creative show was, as they say, a moment. Only he could provide the astonishing feat of techno-magic that ended his show. Inside an empty glass pyramid, a mysterious puff of white smoke appeared from nowhere and spun in midair, slowly resolving itself into the moving, twisting shape of a woman enveloped in the billowing folds of a white dress. It was Kate Moss, her blonde hair and pale arms trailing in a dream-like apparition of fragility and beauty that danced for a few seconds, then shrank and dematerialized into the ether. This vision was in fact a state-of-the-art hologram. The gown, a pale cascade of multiple organza ruffles, wasn’t just an optical effect, though. It subsequently reappeared in the collection’s victory line up, which wound its way around the glass box as the audience was still reverberating with wonder at witnessing this incredible event.
Miu Miu:. Maintaining Miu Miu’s quirky character, Prada applied nostalgic dressmaking techniques to create the collection’s young — but sophisticated — look. A short fit- and-flare coat with a belled brocade miniskirt peeping out from beneath set the genteel tone. Prada sculpted swirled minidresses from iridescent taffetas and brocades, some overpainted with naïve graphics or classical urns. She crafted a masterful minidress from a mélange of spliced knits; showed a waxed leather bolero over a kicky leather mini, and, at her most relaxed, Prada sent out a felt bustier top over a slouchy T-shirt and riding breeches.
Lanvin: Last time around, Alber Elbaz’s fierce, streamlined, high-platformed collection raced ahead of the season, igniting a lady-versus-power-woman debate that has only just burst into flame on other runways. With his whimsical and wonderful fall collection that little puff had ballooned into a powerful, full-cut look that Elbaz took right to the brink. And it looked just right. Tuxedo jackets took on a womanly oomph with nipped waists and rounded, padded hips. Playing on the graphic look of his spring collection with a send-up of its sultry glamour, Elbaz worked a little trompe l’oeil magic, tacking satin hourglass panels onto black minishifts. Satin dresses veiled in feathery tulle took the look light, while tented coatdresses brought a classic Parisian chic to bear.
Louis Vuitton:Like a pack of elegant Vuitton ladies gone wild, Jacobs’ models stormed the runway at a heart-pounding clip, wearing blown-up bucket hats, sweaters slung around their hips, all-terrain platform heels and looks featuring all manner of supreme exaggeration in between. He kept everything pumped up and amplified: chunky suits in tweed and latex, or cinched with sporty toggle ties; elongated waffle knits in umpteen-ply cashmere; even oversized sweatshirts in knitted mink. Jacobs armored a knit coat with beads, baubles and a bushy swath of fur. He paired a slouchy sweater with an iridescent quilted skirt and showed a drawstring peacoat with hot pink velvet raver’s pants. If a few of his overblown styles looked a tad heavy — well, maybe that’s the point.
